Herpetological project dataSince the founding of the Herpetological Working Group in 1999, an initiative to gather and compile herpetological project data from member's military installations and organizations has been conducted. The group's founder, Jim Beemer, conceptualized the compilation as a "project history database". It was felt that a mechanism to facilitate data dissemination and sharing was needed. The initiative's purpose is to provide one single repository for bibliographical information of military herpetological projects, past and present. It acts to permanently document gray literature (which often gets filed and forgotten), broadcasts that literature's existence, provides contact information, and encourages scientific information exchange between resource managers facing similar issues. Collaterally it may reduce government spending by preventing unnecessary duplication of project efforts. The project data originally was organized in a spreadsheet format but has recently evolved into a database that is now offered as a viewable file. If you are a military organization's natural resource manager (or other) and would like to see your installation's herpetological projects listed in this database please contact Tessa Martin-Bashore via email to: TMBashore@aol.com. You may also contact Tessa if you know of projects not currently included in the database. If you are already a data contributor and notice errors in your data listing please contact us so that appropriate changes can be made. This is a non-funded initiative wholly supported by the efforts of our members' volunteer time, please understand that it may take several weeks to verify and add project data to the database. |
