Training Workshop Notes
- You can only register for one training workshop
- If you are unable to attend a training session for which they have registered please cancel your registration at least two weeks in advance of the meeting.
- Many of the workshops have pre-work associated with them. You will receive emails in advance of the course with your "homework" assignments.
- You are expected to view associated pre-recorded content before attending live meetings, panel discussions, and presenter office hours.
Technical Session Notes
- Technical Session presentations and some additional content will be pre-recorded and available for meeting attendees to view at their convenience one week before the event, the week of the event and one week after the event.
- For some sessions you will have access to some content and ability to coordinate with presenters and trainers up to a week after the conference.
- You are expected to view associated pre-recorded content before attending live meetings, panel discussions, and presenter office hours.
- Presenters that are part of a panel discussion, they will not have separate office hours for the associated technical session
- Meeting Attendees Utilizing DoD GOV Computers Will Likely Need to Telework and Disconnect from the DoD GOV Network (disconnect from VPN, but stay connected to the Internet) to View Content. The DoD GOV Networks appear to cause significant time and buffering delays.

Monday Half Day Courses
Climate Change Adaptation Planning for Natural Resource Managers.
PRE-WORK may be required.
PRE-WORK may be required.
(Course Capacity – 35 registrants).
This course was provided in 2018 and 2019. If you have already taken this course in the past, please do not sign up for this course, this year.
This course has been amended from a full day in person course to a half-day virtual course. This is a hands-on training session on developing climate change adaptation actions for natural resource managers. This session
has been modified based on prior feedback from other climate change adaptation workshops for DoD personnel. Responding to climate change in natural resources management will necessitate working across a variety of scales and resource areas. This climate adaptation planning training focuses on project-level considerations for potential climate impacts and identification of management practices that reduce climate related
impacts to infrastructure and natural resources and help meet management goals and support the military mission. This approach has been used at the project level to develop over 250 on-the-ground adaptation demonstration projects (see www.forestadaptation.org/ demonstration-projects). Planning for climate adaptation at a project-level is both complementary to, and supports, adaptation planning conducted at the installation level (e.g. INRMPs). This full-day workshop will focus on incorporating climate change considerations into common natural resources projects such as wildlife habitat improvement, vegetation restoration, stream management, and erosion control. This project-level planning identifies practical, on-the-ground management actions that can help natural systems and infrastructure cope with change, tiering to overarching goals at the installation-level. This process follows an abbreviated format of the Adaptation Workbook used by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) on hundreds of natural resources projects. Participants will work in groups to identify climate adaptation actions for real-world management projects. At the end of the course participants will be able to;
Instructors will be from NIACS.
NOTE: Pre-work may be required to participate in this course! Any interested participants need to commit to completing the pre-work prior to the live virtual training. Registrants will be contacted by course instructors via email with more information closer to the Workshop.

Friday Full-Day Courses
DOD Wildland Fire Agency Administrator Training
The intent of this eight-hour training is to provide an overview of DOD wildland fire policy and implementation. The training covers DoD and Federal wildland fire policy, liability, wildland fire qualification system, fire behavior, safety, wildfire mitigation, fuel management and fire organization structure. The course is intended to provide the student an understanding of the reasons for implementation of National Wildland Fire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards by DoD and the inherent considerations managing a wildland fire program at the installation and agency level. Instructors will include members of the US Air Force Wildland Fire Branch, US Army and a member of the legal community.

Department of Defense Participation in the Avian Knowledge Network: The Who, What, Where, When, Why, and the How.
PRE-WORK is required. (Course Capacity – 30 registrants).

Department of Defense (DoD), through the Legacy Program, funded participation in the Avian Knowledge Network (AKN) along with other federal partners to create the Federal Avian Data Center (FADC). This data center integrates data from similar standardized protocols and data structures for use in analysis, summarization, and visualization. Users have access to sharing roles that include data entry, data management, and data analysis, providing the only national / international enterprise system of its type for scientific
observation protocols, analyzable results, long-term storage, and widespread input. Attendees will learn about how the system is organized, how to create project metadata and input data, how data sharing levels work, how to visualize, analyze, and aggregate data for conservation purposes. They will also learn about capability of pooling Service-specific data, regional data, and habitat-specific data including data from our federal partners. Participants will learn the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the FADC and DoD. They will leave with the capability to upload, archive, access, and use extensive avian data tools to assist in NEPA analysis and assessing impacts of readiness and non-readiness activities. Instructors include engineers and biologists from Point Blue Conservation Science, Klamath Bird Observatory, and ERDC-EL. The trainers will hold “Office Hours” the following week, after the Workshop week. This time will offer attendees the opportunity to communicate directly with trainers and programmers to receive one-on-one technical support for their specific data sets and installation questions.

Structured Decision Making.
PRE-WORK is required. (Course Capacity – 45 registrants)
The goal of these workshops is to develop applications of structured decision making for real, applied DoD and FWS problems that are local in scope and in the process increase capacity in structured decision making expertise within the DoD, FWS and USGS. The current array of examples mostly consists of large-scale, contentious problems, and falsely conveys the ideas that structured decision making is only for the big problems. Rapid prototyping techniques are used during the workshops to demonstrate that structured decision techniques are equally applicable to the everyday decisions made at the field office level, and to provide experiential learning opportunities to increase expertise of DoD, FWS and USGS staff. Instructors may send out requests for DoD specific potential case studies involving natural resources conservation decisions to help facilitate the course and make it more relatable to DoD.
For more back ground on the original course, visit https://training.fws.gov/courses/ALC/ALC3159/resources/structured-decision-making-workshop.html.
Instructors will be from USFWS, USGS and academia with experience using a variety of structured decision making techniques.

IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR REGISTRATION PLEASE READ!!
Due to the growing number of Workshop attendees and the high demand for training, we have created additional restrictions with regards to registration for Monday and Friday courses. These are in place so that the maximum number of NMFWA attendees may have an opportunity to get into one of the training courses.
SPACE IS LIMITED for several courses in order to provide quality training. All training courses require preregistration at the time of the Workshop Registration. Course capacity is listed for each class and will be available until filled, so we encourage those interested to register early!

What courses can I register for?
- Each registrant may select ONLY ONE training course to attend.
- This does NOT apply to the Technical Sessions or other Meetings, only Training Workshops/Courses.
- If you must cancel your training workshop registration, please do so by 21 February 2021. As most training workshops involve some pre-class work (“homework”), we need to be able to provide new registrants from the waitlist ample notification time.
- Wait list capacity will be capped to 10 people per course. If you are on a wait list and a seat becomes available for that course, you will be contacted directly by NMFWA via the email address you provided at the time of registration.
